Interpreting Anatomy: Human Skeletal System

This training will review basic body systems and anatomy, focusing specifically on the Human Skeletal System, its common ailments, and potential treatments. Knowing these details will help Interpreters better appraise potential assignments offered that may be Skeletal, Osteopathic, Rehabilitative, , and/or ER related, and recognizing for which they are the best appropriate match. Some pharmacology and prescription drug basics will also be presented. Walking through a general Doctor Appointment, an Osteopath Specialist’s Appointment, and an Emergency Room Triage scenario will embed schema that is Deaf-centric and Linguistically appropriate and empowering to Deaf patients. Interpreters will be able to apply the foundational Anatomy to multiple scenarios within a Doctor Appointment, while also considering the role of the Medical Interpreter in these situations, applicability of HIPAA and compliance laws, heightened awareness of the Interpreter’s qualifications prior to accepting such assignments, and creating a sense of allyship and collaboration with all parties throughout the Appointment.

Educational Objectives (List specific measurable actions by participants that will demonstrate comprehension and integration of information presented):

- Participants will learn and list the major organs of the Skeletal Systems and their functions.

- Participants will evaluate and differentiate common ailment symptoms from rare symptoms, for medical scenarios, in 3 out of 4 scenarios.

- Participants will compare and contrast multi-modal interpreting approaches when working with linguistically diverse Deaf patients, and generate model versions of their interpretations.
