Substance Use in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Population

This workshop focuses on identification of the population and an examination of the problems that Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals suffer in relationship to both mental health disorders and drinking and drug using behaviors. It raises interpreters’ capabilities of examining the impact of mental health and substance use in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. The new diagnosis on DSM 5 will be introduced as well as appropriate sign terminologies in both Mental Health and Substance Use.

• Will identify the factors/impacts of Mental Health and Substance Abuse in the Deaf Community
• Will utilize proper signs during the Mental Health and Substance Abuse assessments
• Will comprehend definitions of new Mental Health and Substance Use diagnosis in DSM 5
