This foundation course examines the phenomena of power, privilege, and oppression and their effects on individuals, families, and communities in the context of the values of social and economic justice and the interpreting profession. The course is intended to increase awareness of the intersectionality of multiple oppressions, focusing on race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, hearing status, and sexual orientation.  Using Bobbie Harro’s Cycle of Socialization, participants will gain a beginning self-awareness to identify the influence of personal biases and values that impact practice with diverse groups.  Exploring Power, Privilege, and Oppression, participants will examine Harro’s Cycle of Liberation, which provides a road map to changing behavior, beliefs, and community-building.  The Course requires three responses to discussion questions (1 original response to the question and a response to at least two peers).
